Hulamin made a R60 000 donation to PROTEC, received by General Manager Rose Smuts. "This amount will be used to sponsor 12 students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are studying Mathematics and Science,"' said Rose.
PROTEC is an acronym which stands for Programme for Technological Careers and is a non-profit organization operating in Pietermaritzburg and in seven other branches around Kwazulu Natal. PROTEC provides enrichment education in Physical Science, Mathematics, English and basic IT education to 145 pupils in Grades 10, 11 and 12, from 34 schools in the KZN region. PROTEC also provides what is referred to as "World of Work" education dealing with making informed career choices and choosing tertiary institutions.
She added that PROTEC offers a number of general enrichment programmes such as scientific research projects for a national science and technology EXPO, bridge building competitions, field excursions, participation in the national Technology Olympiad and Formula 1 model car racing project, factory site visits and practical electronics workshops. "These 12 students will only be paying a commitment fee of R150 and the remainder of R4750 per annum will be covered by the Hulamin donation,"' she concluded
