Hulamin has recently made its second donation to the Children in Distress (CINDI) network. This project, called Singatha, focuses on providing children from households that are affected by poverty, unemployment and HIV/AIDS with a full school uniform that otherwise would not have been afforded. By obtaining a full school uniform, these vulnerable children are empowered, as they are able to access their right to education and are not excluded from the schooling context.
Yvonne Spain, Director of CINDI network says that the funds provided by Hulamin will be used to supply basic school uniforms for 100 orphaned and vulnerable school children in and around Pietermaritzburg. Each of these children will receive a basic school uniform kit that consists of a pair of trousers or a tunic, two shirts, a jersey, three pairs of socks and brand new pair of shoes. "By being allowed the opportunity to wear a uniform, these children will no longer be subject to victimization, exclusion and stereotypes at school, as they will be able to fit in more easily with other children and their self-image will be enhanced", she added. A Grade 10 learner said "I was very happy and still am full of joy because of your surprise. Now I am in full uniform and there is no difference between me and the other children. We are all the same!"
CINDI Network was founded in 1996 and today has over two hundred members consisting of NGOs, CBOs, government departments and individuals who work together in Kwa-Zulu Natal to promote the rights of children affected and/or orphaned by HIV/AIDS.
